How to Choose an Independent Living Facility

Independent Living Facilities are often referred to as congregate living facilities. These facilities offer the individual or couple an alternative to maintaining their own personal residence. Not only do they simplify the "up keep" of a home, they offer an opportunity for socialization. Independent living facilities vary in structure and "benefits." One benefit may be optional congregate activities. Many facilities have congregate meals while others have a kitchen within each residence. The important factor to remember is that in an independent living facility the individual must be able to meet all of his or her personal needs. If at anytime this is not possible, the individual must find a way to get assistance on their own because the facility is not licensed to provide this type of assistance.

To inquire about an Independent Living Facility ask the following questions:

How many rooms are there?

Does it have a kitchen or kitchenette?

Is there a congregate dining area?

Is there a security system?

What is the monthly payment?

What are the age requirements?

Is there a waiting list?

Are their laundry facilities on the property?

Is there any housekeeping offered by the facility?

Are there any activities available?

Are facilities senior friendly (handicap accessible, etc.)?
